Things to consider:
Q: How long will treatment take?
A: It depends on the complexity of your case. Simple cases may take 3-6 months,
while more complex ones can run 12+ months. For example, private UK clinic guides
estimate treatment times for fixed metal braces of around 6-12 months for many
cases.
Q: Will the braces hurt?
A: You may feel pressure or soreness for a few days after each wire adjustment —
this is normal and a sign the teeth are moving. Discomfort is typically mild and
managed with over-the-counter pain relief and soft foods.
Q: What food restrictions are there?
A: With metal braces you should avoid very hard or sticky foods (such as nuts, hard
candy, chewing gum, caramel) that can dislodge brackets or bend wires. Good oral
hygiene is crucial because brackets create extra food‐trapping areas.
Q: Can I still play sports or musical instruments?
A: Yes — you simply need to use the appropriate mouthguard for contact sports, and
your orthodontist can give you guidance for playing wind/woodwind instruments to
minimise irritation from brackets.
Q: What happens after the braces are removed?
A: You’ll receive retainers (fixed and/or removable) to maintain your alignment.
Without retainers, teeth may shift back into previous positions. Retention is a critical
part of long-term success.
Q: Are metal braces right for adults?
A: Absolutely. Many adult patients choose metal braces because they’re highly
effective, even though aesthetic concerns may lead some to prefer ceramic or aligner
options.
