Lingual braces are a type of fixed orthodontic appliance where the brackets and wires are placed on the inside of the teeth, rather than the front so that the treatment isn’t noticeable to others. They work exactly like traditional braces in terms of tooth movement but are virtually invisible from the outside.
Step 1 – Free Consultation
We’ll review your dental and orthodontic history, perform a 3D scan or impressions, assess your bite and alignment goals, and explain whether lingual braces are suitable for you.
Step 2 – Custom Planning & Bonding of Brackets
Your orthodontist will plan every bracket, wire and movement. On the fitting day: the brackets are bonded to the back of your teeth and the initial arch-wire placed.
Step 3 – Adjustment Visits & Monitoring
You’ll attend regular adjustment visits (typically every 4-6 weeks) where wires are adjusted, elastics fitted (if required), and progress monitored.
Step 4 – Debonding, Whitening & Retention
Once active treatment is complete, the brackets and wires are removed, teeth cleaned/polished, free teeth whitening and retainers fitted (fixed and/or removable) to maintain your results.

The duration depends on the complexity of your alignment and bite issues. For moderate cases you might see 6-18 months; very complex cases may take longer.
Some patients experience a short-term change in speech (e.g., mild lisp) especially in the first few days/weeks as the tongue adapts to the inner brackets. Most adjust
quickly.
The position behind the teeth can take time to get used to, you may feel the tongue contacting brackets. However, most patients adapt within 1-2 weeks and the brackets are low profile.
Yes, but because the brackets are behind your teeth, you should use the appropriate mouthguard (for contact sports) and your orthodontist will advise on instrument playing (especially wind/woodwind) while you adapt.
You’ll receive retainers (fixed behind the teeth and/or removable) to maintain your alignment. Without retention teeth may gradually shift back.
Definitely. They are one of the best options for adults who want full orthodontic correction with minimal visual impact.
Lingual braces are fixed and work continuously, whereas aligner only work when you are wearing them. They are often more suitable for complex bite or root movements. Both are discreet options but differ in mechanics, cost and maintenance.
